Get Hip: Ab Soul Drops by the Breakfast Club to Talk Album Drop "These Days"

Ab Soul is one of the great members of Black Hippy and Top Dawg crews that is finally starting to get the attention his music deserves. Many artists know they've arrived once they end up on the Breakfast Club radio show in New York; where they tend to share their back stories with the world. Ab Soul has been heard on many of his fellow TD mixtapes and albums as well as Jhene Aiko's Sailing Souls mixtape (W.T.H.). But little know much about the black lipped pastor.

In this Breakfast Club interview he dishes on the rare disease that caused his lip discoloration and sunglasses flow, his current relationship with video model Yaris Sanchez, the untimely death of his longtime girlfriend Alori Joh who used to be the distinct background vocalist on Top Dawg music (Section.80 etc..) plus more:

#GlaMaRecommends These Days... is available on iTunes and in stores now; and its definitely a dope listen. Aside from the fire features from Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco, Ravaughn, JMSN and much more, the album is a perfect blend of ratchetness and righteousness... in true Top Dawg fashion.

RIP MJ: D.Y.K. Michael Jackson Could Beatbox?

Don't think Timberland and Pharrell were the first ones to use strange noises and beat boxing for their music. MJ started most of his creative processes for his songs with his beat boxing. For 5th Anniversary of the late/great Michael Jackson's untimely passing, we thought we'd share some of his best beat boxing moments caught on camera. Check him out!

New Music: Troy Ave - Your Style (Remix) ft. Puff Daddy, Ma$e and T.I.

T.I., Ma$e and P. Diddy (who's apparently returning to his Puff Daddy '95 pseudonym) recently hopped on the Your Style remix. Contrary to Ave's ambitious statement that he's "brought New York back", his and T.I.'s verse is pretty much the best ones, but Ma$e follows close behind with wack lyrics from Diddy in last place.

Suavemente: Angie Martinez Leaves Hot 97 for New Gig at Power 105.1

This was a big morning for Latinas the on the New York based radio show The Breakfast Club. Not only because JLo stopped by, but also because of their big announcement of Angie Martinez's arrival to their station. If you aren't hip, NY radio stations Hot 97 and Power 105.1 have an intense rivalry (or friendly competition at the least) that's spanned across the years from beefs with artists going to only one of their stations at a time (Jay Z & Nas beef, Nicki Minaj) to past employees like the Breakfast Club's own, DJ Envy leaving Hot 97 for Power 105.1. This year they both premiered TV shows and it seemed as thought the competition was at a meeting point until their "queen", Angie Martinez made the ultimate chess move and resigned from Hot 97, only to officially announce her new home at Power less than 24 hours later.

And Power 105.1 is equally elated:

Angie Martinez is excited to join the family and shared these words in the official press release.
"I want to thank, Thea Mitchem, Tom Poleman and Doc Wynter for this incredible opportunity," said Martinez. "I’m excited to join Power 105.1 in New York and The Beat in Miami and expand my brand even further in the coming months."
"Angie is the Queen of New York City radio – she is an incredible talent who continues to blaze trails and we are excited to have her join the team at Power 105.1 and The Beat in Miami," said Thea Mitchem, Senior Vice President of Programming – Major Markets, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. "Angie has a long, successful history and we look forward to expanding her distinctive style and compelling content to more of our listeners."
We're happy to have Angie Martinez!

Well Power 105.1, you've got the juice now man.

Flashing Lights, One Night with Kelis

Kelis put on a sensational show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The mood was light, and filled with a refreshing sense of upbeat flashing lights, full of neon colors of blue, purple, red and green.

Underground neo-soul artist, Son Little, opened the late night special. The excitement filled the room with anticipation for Kelis to hit the stage and amaze us with her effortless unique style. Son Little lightened the crowd with his witty jokes of his two man band and instruments referencing his Mac computer, Microphone, and Bell. His music was warm and gave a calm mellow feeling to ease the tension of the long wait to see the main attraction. The DJ played old school Hip-Hop and R&B from the late 90’s and early millennium to get the crowd in the zone.

After much ado Kelis hits the stage in her fabulosity wearing an emerald green sweater, high waist silver and green sequenced pants with big hair similar to an 80’s version of Chaka Khan. She opened the set with a rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.” Her six man band consisted of drums, saxophone, trumpet, keyboard, electric guitar and tambourine playing tunes of a jazzy dance-electronica. Although it’s been a while since Kelis has musically been in the public eye, her performance was as if she never took a break. Her raspy distinguished voice was not only thrilling but celestial and up lifting. She re-introduced some of her greatest hits from Get Along With You to some of her newer material such as Rumble. Kelis stage presence left a lasting impression for all of us to remember. It was a classic Kelis concert full of color, inspiration, peace and love.

UPDATE: GlaMA Recommends: Keshia Chante Should've Gotten the Aaliyah BioPic Role Over Zendaya

You guys already know how I feel about Zendaya getting this epic Biopic role for Aaliyah over Keshia Chante, but if you didn't know, I feel Keshia was perfect for it and got shaded. For those who aren't hip, Keshia Chante was slated for the role back when the film was first in production, but things fell through once the family didn't fully support it. Keshia has been quoted saying she respectfully bowed out due to the lack of support from the family and out of respect for their wishes. However... its not quite clear whether the family supported the VH1 pull for the film, nor the official Lifetime film that will be released later this year with Zendaya staring in it. Keshia, whom seems to be quite the spitting image of Aaliyah in the promo images below, had the looks and talents for the role plus the effortless youthful sex appeal needed to embody Aaliyah's steeze. Zendaya a sweet talented girl herself, simply does not. Regardless, both girls are very talented, and although Keshia Chante is a singer and dancer, Zendaya is indeed both of those, and a trained actress

But before I continue my rant, I want to pole the people. should it have been Keshia or Zendaya?

Keshia

Zendaya

All shade aside, I wish the girl the best and hope she knocks the role out the park, because people will be watching and judging. Watch Zendaya talk about her excitement to do the film below:

Update: TMZ claims that Aaliyah's family is NOT on board with this film production and are planning to sue, and not just because they were the last ones to know of it:

Aaliyah's uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, tells us the family is pissed that no one from the network contacted them about the movie.
Hankerson says the family will block any attempt on Lifetime's part to use any of Aaliyah's music.  He says the family has hired a lawyer and will do everything they can to block release of the flick.
The family is not opposed to a big, theatrical film, but thinks a TV movie is too small for someone as big as Aaliyah.

And the trolling continues...

Just for Kicks: J Cole releases Lights Please Video for The Warm Up 5th Anniversary

Recently J. Cole decided to release something he's been holding on to for the past 5+ years; the visual to his critically acclaimed tune "Lights Please".

Hip Hop Wired gives the full deets:

On Sunday (June 15), the Roc Nation signee rummaged through the MTV vault and world-premiered the visuals for the song that garnered Jay Z’s attention.
“We been holding on to it for way too long,” said Cole to the RapFix host before explaining that he and his team filmed the video circa August 2008.
Despite the fact that “Lights Please” (off The Warm Up) is the song that got him a major record deal, Cole felt it wasn’t yet time to release the accompanying cinematography.
Might we add that Cole gets pretty warm and cozy with the girl in this video as well. Freaky Jermaine, we like..we like. ;-)
